3 Foods You Need To Avoid During Pregnancy!

Diet, in particular, needs more attention, and you have to be careful with nutrition in all the three trimesters.   • Fishes with high mercury content. Seafood, especially some of the fishes, contain considerable amount of mercury, which must be avoided during pregnancy. However, fishes are a good source of lean protein, and options like salmon and prawns are just ideal for daily diet.

  • Raw, undercooked and processed meats. While meats, particularly the lean meats, are great sources of protein, you need to avoid uncooked and raw meats under all circumstances. This is because of the presence of bacteria, such as Listeria and E. coli, which are considered harmful during pregnancy. Avoid processed meat products, as well.
  • Raw eggs. Salmonella has been found in raw eggs, and an infection can lead to a number of complications, including nausea, vomiting, and cramps. Avoid raw eggs, as well as eggs that have been lightly scrambled, poached or used in dressings. If you can find in your local market, go for pasteurized eggs at all times or make sure that you have hard boiled the eggs or have cooked it thoroughly before eating.

Dairy is a good source of calcium and protein, but avoid anything that’s unpasteurized, right from milk and cheese to yogurt. Consumption of alcohol has been linked to stillbirth and miscarriage, and pregnant women are advised against alcohol at all times. While you may need more of maintenance calories, you want to focus on eating healthy foods that are high on nutrients, especially folate and iron. As such, avoid all sorts of unwanted processed foods at all times and make sure that the food you eat is freshly cooked from fresh ingredients. Doctors also often advise against sprouts, which can be contaminated with Salmonella.
